The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has introduced a significant change to the laws governing boundary catches, aiming to standardize and clarify the rules for fair play. This new regulation will come into effect for international matches starting June 17, 2025, and will be officially incorporated into the MCC’s Laws of Cricket in October 2026.
๐ Whatโs the New Rule?
- One Jump Allowed: A fielder may jump from outside the boundary and make contact with the ball once in the air. After that, they must land inside the field of play for the catch to be valid.
- No Multiple Jumps: Fielders are prohibited from making multiple airborne contacts with the ball while outside the boundary. If this occurs, the ball is considered to have crossed the boundary, resulting in a boundary score (four or six runs).
- Relay Catches: If a fielder tosses the ball outside the boundary and does not return inside before completing the catch, it is deemed a boundary.
๐ Why the Change?
Previously, fielders could make multiple airborne contacts with the ball outside the boundary, provided they didn’t touch the ground beyond the boundary while holding it. This led to spectacular but controversial catches, such as Michael Neser’s 2023 Big Bash League catch, where he jumped, tossed the ball up outside, landed, jumped again, and caught it inside. While legal at the time, it sparked debates about fairness and consistency. The MCC and the International Cricket Council (ICC) decided to revise the rule to ensure clarity and fairness in boundary catch situations.
โ Whatโs Still Allowed?
- Inside Boundary Jumps: Fielders can still jump from inside the boundary, push the ball up, step outside, and dive back in to complete the catch.
- Airborne Catches: Catching the ball in the air while jumping from inside the boundary remains permissible.
These dynamic and athletic fielding maneuvers continue to be part of the game.
๐ Implementation Timeline
- June 17, 2025: The new rule will be applied in international matches, starting with the Sri Lanka vs. Bangladesh Test series.
- October 2026: The rule will be officially added to the MCC’s Laws of Cricket.
๐ง Potential Impact on the Game
This rule change may reduce the frequency of boundary catches involving multiple airborne contacts, particularly in fast-paced formats like T20s. Teams might need to adopt alternative strategies to prevent boundaries, and fans may witness fewer of these high-flying fielding feats. However, the change aims to promote fairness and consistency in adjudicating boundary catch situations.
