A SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule has successfully docked at the International Space Station (ISS), marking the arrival of a new team of astronauts and paving the way for Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams to return home.
Originally scheduled for an eight-day mission, Butch and Sunita have spent over nine months on the ISS due to technical issues with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, which they arrived in. NASA deemed it unsafe for their return, opting instead to bring them back on SpaceX’s Dragon capsule during a scheduled crew rotation.
NASA officials expressed excitement about their return, with Steve Stich, manager of NASA’s commercial crew program, commending the astronauts for their resilience. A two-day handover will take place before their departure, but their return depends on weather conditions for a safe landing.
The extended stay has undoubtedly affected their personal lives, but the astronauts have maintained a positive outlook. Despite Boeing’s insistence that Starliner was safe for re-entry, NASA prioritized safety, leading to this delayed return.
Now, as the crew rotation completes, all eyes are on Butch and Sunita’s long-awaited return to Earth.
