The upcoming Prabhas-starrer Spirit has found itself in the middle of a heated controversy, with director Sandeep Reddy Vanga addressing recent developments through a strong statement on social media. Though he refrained from naming anyone directly, fans and media are linking his remarks to actor Deepika Padukone, who was earlier rumored to be part of the film.
When Spirit was announced back in 2023, speculations were rife that Deepika Padukone—already sharing screen space with Prabhas in Kalki 2898 AD—would be cast opposite him again. However, in recent days, reports have suggested that Deepika opted out of the project, allegedly due to disagreements over her remuneration and working conditions. Sources also claimed she made remarks about a filmmaker questioning her professional priorities in light of her recent motherhood.
Following her exit, Triptii Dimri—who impressed audiences with her performance in Animal, also directed by Vanga—was officially brought on board as the female lead. Triptii expressed her excitement on social media, stating, “Still sinking in… so grateful to be trusted with this journey.”
Shortly after Triptii’s announcement, Vanga took to X (formerly Twitter) to vent his frustration over what he described as “dirty PR games” and a deliberate attempt to “put down a younger actor.” While he didn’t explicitly mention Deepika, his words seemed to target the recent narratives circulating around the casting change.
In his note, Vanga questioned the idea of feminism being used as a cover for undermining others, writing,
“Putting down a younger actor and ousting my story? Is this what your feminism stands for? As a filmmaker, I put years of hard work into my craft. For me, filmmaking is everything. You didn’t get it. You won’t get it. You will never get it.”
He concluded with a sharp message in Hindi,
“Aisa karo… Agli baar poori kahani bolna… kyunki mujhe jara bhi farak nahi padta (Next time, tell the full story… because I really don’t care),”
followed by the proverb, “Khundak mein billi khamba noche” (In spite, the cat scratches the pole)—implying frustration misdirected as blame.
With the film still in the spotlight for off-screen drama, fans are eagerly waiting to see how Spirit unfolds with Triptii Dimri and Prabhas. Meanwhile, the industry continues to debate the fine line between professional choices, media narratives, and personal reputation in the ever-watchful world of showbiz.
