In a major leadership change, Shubman Gill has been named the 37th Test captain of the Indian men’s cricket team. The 25-year-old will lead India in a five-match Test series against England starting June 20, 2025. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been appointed as the vice-captain for the tour.
The announcement came after the senior selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, met in Mumbai to finalize an 18-member squad. The move signals a fresh start for Indian Test cricket, following Rohit Sharma’s exit from the format and a transitional phase in the team setup.
A Fresh Face for the Long Haul
Though relatively young, Gill has been seen as a future leader for some time. He has led India in T20Is and the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. While his record in overseas Tests is still developing, selectors believe in giving him time to grow into the role.
Pant’s Comeback & Youth-Driven Squad
Pant’s return as vice-captain marks his full comeback after injury, bringing aggression and experience to the squad. India’s Test team also welcomes newcomers like Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh, while senior pacer Mohammed Shami misses out due to fitness issues. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj will lead the pace attack.
